Dear Editor:
Just over 30 years ago, a group of Bolton people decided to form a soccer club here to accommodate all those youngsters who had shown an interest in this sport.

This item on the agenda was a name for the club. Since there was already a Bolton club in England, it was decided to contact them and ask if we might use their name, crest and colours. It was a rounding success as they provided all the criteria we requested. To this day that liaison has continued to grow with frequent correspondence, trading ideas like coaching with manuals and CDs etc.

With very little fanfare and the hard work and dedication of hundreds of local residents The Bolton Wanderers Soccer Club has grown into a first class organization. The executive, the coaches, the referees and the parents have taken this club with only 40 players in its first year to over 3,100 registered local players in different leagues and from the age of 3 to 74. That to me is an unheralded phenomenal success story.

For those of you in the know the original English Bolton Wanderers Soccer Club is coming to Canada to play at the BMO field on July 21. There is the possibility that some of their coaches and or players could be making a visit to our fair town.

In recognition to all the people who have made our club a success, including all the players, sponsors, the executive, the coaches, the referees and the parents, would it be fitting if our town council declared Wednesday, July 21 as Bolton Wanderers Soccer Club Day? We would probably be the first town in Ontario to celebrate an achievement like this, which has and still does involve a large portion of our population and could provide a great incentive for all our local retailers to acknowledge our soccer citizens accordingly.

When we had the Olympic run through Bolton it was only a couple of hours yet generated fantastic participation from our residents. Here is another, probably once in a long time, opportunity to create some excitement in Bolton. Let’s all help make this front page positive news and move forward to a celebration of success. Why not express your thoughts and ideas to our Mayor.

Hal Siemens, Caledon
